Forge City Works: Empowering Hartford Through Culinary Training and Food Access

Forge City Works is dedicated to transforming lives through food-based initiatives. Our approach combines culinary job training, social enterprise, and community engagement to address systemic challenges in the community.

Culinary Job Training

At the heart of Forge City Works is a comprehensive culinary job training program. This initiative provides individuals facing employment barriers with hands-on experience in the culinary arts, equipping them with the skills needed to secure sustainable employment in the food industry. The program not only imparts technical skills but also fosters personal growth and confidence among participants.

Social Enterprises

Forge City Works operates several social enterprises that serve as both training grounds for program participants and sources of revenue to support their mission:

  • Fire by Forge Restaurant: A full-service restaurant offering a diverse menu, where trainees gain real-world experience in a professional kitchen setting.

  • Fire by Forge Catering: Provides catering services for various events, allowing trainees to learn about large-scale food preparation and service.

  • The Grocery on Broad: A community grocery store that increases access to fresh, healthy food in Hartford’s food desert areas.

  • The Bakeshop: Provides housemade baked goods to our own businesses as well as wholesales to outside clients.

Community Impact

Through these initiatives, Forge City Works addresses critical issues such as unemployment and food insecurity. By providing job training and increasing access to nutritious food, they contribute to the overall well-being and economic stability of the Hartford community.
